Who we are
The Haus of Sugar was created a little over a year ago.. and also years before that. DIY has always been embedded in my DNA, so establishing this seed was a welcomed pivot from my dance industry roots. I have always loved high fashion, the world of drag and the endless spaces that merge the two.
When the pandemic hit, I began to experiment with makeup and working with unconventional materials. I had no idea what I was doing, but also had never felt so settled. As time passed, I felt a powerful urge to create a space where I could indulge in my other creative interests alongside movement work. A space I could not only have for myself, but share with others as well. With whatever materials I had on hand, I started teaching myself to sew. Through a lot of trial and error I continued making and finding my taste.
While building my brand, I'm still working in the industry. Surrounded by and wearing all types of clothing and costumes can be overwhelming in the best way for someone like me. On every job I found myself more and more interested in what the designers were drafting. How they tailored pieces to our bodies to perfectly. How the vision boards touched the ground and reached the ceiling. The sight of costume racks for miles. The sound of the sewing machine moments before doors opened. Standing in my fittings wide eyed and asking questions, I knew one thing was very clear. I wanted to be on both sides of the fence.
Whether it’s choreography, facewear, hats, garments or hair and makeup, it can all be found in the heart of this house. With the All That Jazz collection, I wanted to create a line that felt personal but also spoke to the masses. An everyday reminder of the camp that lives within us all. The theater kids of the world, the dance teachers, the musicians, the students, the queer, and the brave.
With each item thought through at length, and currently coming off a world tour, it had to be split between two releases. Experience Act 1 and enjoy. I thank you for your patience and I hope you find something that resonates with you, in your world, wherever you are.
What started as an idea has grown into a dream. While I navigate operating a small business, I strive to shape The Haus of Sugar in the most sustainable way possible. Right now it is just me making each item with love and care. And the support of you. With each order a direct response will follow detailing when you can expect to receive your package. Please find our email in the icon reading ‘contact’. There is no limit to questions, comments, feedback, etc. We want to hear from you.
With kindness and appreciation,
Jasmine Sugar
